Rakesh Chaurasia

Edmonton welcomes two extraordinary torchbearers of Indian classical music for one transcendent evening.

Rakesh Chaurasia, two-time Grammy Award winner and nephew of the legendary Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, is widely regarded as one of the finest bansuri players of his generation. His 2024 Grammy wins — for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album and Best Global Music Performance — alongside Zakir Hussain, Béla Fleck, and Edgar Meyer cemented his place on the world stage. With a playing style that balances power and serenity, Rakesh’s bamboo flute has captivated audiences from Paris to San Francisco and everywhere in between.

Amit Kavthekar

Accompanying him on tabla is Amit Kavthekar, the last formally ordained (ganda-bandhan) disciple of the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha and a prominent student of the late Ustad Zakir Hussain. A child prodigy who began training at the age of six, Kavthekar has performed at Carnegie Hall, the United Nations General Assembly, and alongside icons such as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj, and guitarist Al Di Meola. His rhythmic mastery and sensitive accompaniment make him one of the most sought-after tabla players of his generation.

When bansuri meets tabla in the hands of two artists carrying forward the legacies of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Alla Rakha, and Ustad Zakir Hussain, the result is nothing short of magical. Join us for an evening of ragas, rhythm, and musical transcendence.
